What
Brass Of Peace Is About The field of music is very competitive. Only a small percentage of those who train to become musicians actually become employed as performers in the field of music. The Brass of Peace Scholarship Program (BOP), a tuition-free program for talented high school students sponsored by Eclipse Chamber Orchestra (age 15-18) is an intensive training program which prepares its members for greater success in the very competitive field of music. For a period of 36 weeks during the school year, the Brass of Peace Scholars, a group of 13-15 gifted children, are given two-hour weekly coaching sessions with Eclipse Music Director and National Symphony Orchestra hornist, Sylvia Alimena. Scholarship members prepare and perform several demanding programs over the course of the year. Members are also given individual attention during the rehearsals and at the annual Brass of Peace Masterclasses. There are no fees or tuition of any kind. Free tickets to Eclipse Chamber Orchestra concerts are provided for the members and their families. The ultimate goal is to build individual and ensemble skills as well as help them build confidence in performing and public speaking. The
Kidshare Concerts: Free In-School Concerts The Brass of Peace
experience is also a wonderful lesson for young adults in the
rewards of giving their time to the community and to others who
are less fortunate than them. At these concerts the teenage members of Brass of Peace demonstrate and talk about their brass instruments. Thanks to the National Symphony Orchestra, which provides organizational help and transportation to events, this year as many as 1200 elementary school children at Hart Middle School, Moten, Park View, Chamberlain, Cleveland, Edison Friendship, Fletcher-Johnson and Plummer Elementary schools heard a concert in their school by Brass of Peace . Thanks to the generosity of local grant-making organizations, several free family concerts are also presented during the year at our home at Peace Lutheran Church in Annandale, Virginia. During these in-school and family concerts, a Brass of Peace Scholar from each section describes his/her instrument and gives a short demonstration. Children
Providing Role Models for Other Children The Children who participate in Brass of Peace are from every economic, ethnic and racial background. The Kidshare Concerts presented by Brass of Peace in the schools will provide other children with inspiration and more importantly, a role model. The children being served will see and hear first hand that, no matter what your station in life is, discipline and hard work will bring you past your obstacles and to your goals. The model and incentive provided by Brass of Peace performances can't be matched by an other in-school project. Please call the Eclipse Chamber Orchestra office (703) 256-2956 for audition information.
